Triathlon Take Four
My dear Dad-o, Jerry Finney, has been living with prostate cancer for the past 8 years. That cancer has now taken up residence in his liver, abdomen, spine, ribs, and lymph system and has a new name of "high grade neuroendicrine carcinoma." It is considered terminal. If you'd like to stay up to date on his progress, feel free to check out this website, where you can sign up to receive updates. As is his style, he's taking it all in stride and continuing to enjoy life. He continues to display his stellar sense of humor. For example, as I was visiting after his first round of chemo in February, checking in, Mom realized it was past time for meds:
Mom: "Oh no, I'm five minutes late with your pill!"
Dad: "Oh no!" (makes dramatic choking sounds followed by a wink and a chuckle)
My Dad has always been an inspiration in terms of being physically active. He's the one who taught me how to play volleyball and softball, the one whose regular yoga practice helped him have a speedy recovery from his first cancer surgery 8 years ago, the one who canoed rivers and lakes with me and just got a new canoe last summer. He's also the guy who'd be seen walking backwards up a hill on his lunch break and get weird looks about it. During my last visit in May, we played horseshoes, bocce ball, and a game of catch on the beach. Physical activity has always been a part of life for my Dad, and, in turn, for me.
On Sunday, August 14, I’m participating in my 4th triathlon! I will swim 500 yards, bike 15.5 miles, and run 5k, to raise money for ZERO, to help end prostate cancer. My goal is to raise $4000. That’s roughly $1333 per segment of swimming, biking, and running. Won’t you join me in honoring my father, Jerry Finney, and supporting this organization that is working to end the cancer that he has been living with for so long?
You can easily make your tax-deductible donation via the "fundraising progress" link on this website. Any amount you choose to give will be much appreciated. You've got between now and August 14 to make a financial contribution for Swim Bike Run Try for Zero, but you're welcome to continue your support at any amount at any time after the event as well!
I’ll also be updating this website as I train over the coming months.
Along with financial support, I’m happy to hear as many encouraging statements as you can stand or have some training buddies along the way.
